‘The Aces Years - 1940s’ (due out April 30, 2027).
ACES legend and former World Champion Peter Collins MBE and local journalist and former assistant Sports Editor of the Stockport Express Advertiser Howard Jones, have again joined forces to bring Belle Vue fans worldwide a quite remarkable series of books on the history, of arguably the sports most famous speedway club - The Belle Vue Aces.
The Aces Years - 1940s will be the sixth book in the series (#2 in its listing) to be published and it’s a unique style publication (A4 size) which charts the complete history of the club and it’s in FULL COLOUR.
Enjoy 168 pages of sheer speedway and Belle Vue Aces nostalgia as we turn back the pages to some exciting and somewhat worrying times, that saw WARTIME SPEEDWAY being raced in the early years of the decade and then into the late 1940s when some iconic names signed on for the world famous Belle Vue Aces.
Following on from the first issue in the series ‘The Aces Years - 1970s’ (published October 2024), and the second book ‘The Aces Years - 1950s’ (published April 2025) and the third book ‘The Aces Years - 1960s,’ (published October 2025) and the fourth ‘The Aces Years - 1980s, (published April 2026), and the fifth offering in the series of ‘The Aces Years - 1990s’ (published October 2026).
We chart the story of the troubled early war years at Belle Vue and what would become the proud boast of the club that ‘WE NEVER CLOSED’ as speedway ran right through the years between 1940-1945 before re-emerging to league speedway in 1946 and the rider pooling that saw new Aces boss, Miss Alice Hart pin her hopes on the legend that he already was, Jack Parker.
Many felt that she would line-up former ‘30s Aces star Bill Kitchen, but no, she was determined to bring Parker to Belle Vue and he was to become an Aces legend and fully justify ‘The Lady in the Beret’s’ choice.
Of course lots more happened in the 1940s much of which is still unknown to Aces fans even today. This book digs out the hard facts, the stats and the photos of the day and as you might expect - it’s a fascinating read.
